#6 How one cat’s death sentence changed Kasie Maxwell’s life

It all started with a 9 year old cat given a death sentence: 3 months to live. Today’s guest spent an entire night studying, realizing she’d been doing it all wrong, and changed her cat’s diet over the next year with what she learned. Her cat recovered and was never sick again, dying at the respectable age of 22.

Raw food for pets got its well deserved introduction to San Francisco in a big way when Kasie Maxwell Grujcic got a bunch of people to make an “assembly line” in a friend’s garage in 2001. She provided the direction and know how, gave everyone a task towards one end goal: everyone goes home with excellent raw dog food for a month.

The rest, as they say, is history, and countless lives have been changed for the better with Kasie’s guidance, kindness and inclusive attitude. “Bones scare you? No worries, you don’t have to feed bones yet!”

This episode is packed with gems of hard won knowledge, health challenges others would have given up from, bold decisions and successes that will inspire and amaze you.

It’s all about honor for me, honoring the land, the environment, the animals being raised for food, honoring the producer of that food… and honoring the animals in my care which are carnivores…”

Listen closely and be inspired by this living example of determination and selfless service to the animals and the planet.

I have Russian Kifer grains I have used for years making my own probiotics from organic cows milk. Is it good or bad to incorporate some of this Kifer into my cat and dogs diet?

Absolutely a great idea to incorporate this into any dog or cat’s diet on the regular.

Thanks so much for your super helpful podcast! Is the freeze dried raw you can buy in a bag from companies comparable to the regular raw food benefits at all?

    • Will Falconer, DVM on February 18, 2023 at 9:03 am

      Hey Chelsea,
It’s not. A slight step better than kibble, which needs more starch to make it extrudable, but a far cry from prey, processed like it has been.
Best bet is always going to be raw, balanced food, whether you buy or make it.
      Thanks for stopping by.
Kasie has loads of great advice, as a future episode with her shows, making the jump to raw.

Thank you so much! I listened to that great episode as well now, and I was wondering, does gently cooked raw food still contain much of the benefits, and still better than kibble? Also what about buying raw from companies that use processing like HPP? Your feedback is always so appreciated!!

        • Will Falconer, DVM on March 3, 2023 at 11:52 pm

There’s a great loss in cooking, and “gentle” rarely means enzymes are not inactivated and probiotics killed, for example.
Better than kibble, but missing LIFE. Ditto with HPP. If you missed my free report on HPP, it’s part of your free library in the Vital Animal Pack. Here’s the link.

I used to give my very small, one very tiny, dogs raw chicken wings and they ate the whole wing, bones and all- no problems arose from that – but I worried so much that I stopped that, and gave them raw beef ribs bones sawed into into a smaller size – then, when the dogs would chew them down to a size that I thought was dangerous, I would remove the piece. About two years ago my small yorkie grabbed a piece I was going to pick up and gulped it down. It got stuck right in the place the esophagus opens up into the stomach – I live way out and there are no vets here that have the equipment to remove this – So three days later I was able to get into an “emergency vet” in the city, and the bone was removed – cost – over one thousand dollars. That is enough to make one wary of bones. Because we still do not have enough of a population for vets to invest in all necessary equipment, I still feed them rib bones but I remove them much sooner when the meat is gone.and they have been able to scrape off some of the bone. My little yorkie survived.and has no after effects from this and has no diseases. She is 14 now. I read that yorkies have the most problem with stuff blocking their throat because they snatch and grab and gulp -to make sure that no one can get whatever it is that they have.
