#26 Leaky gut: what, why, and how to fix it

My guest this week is Julie Anne Lee, homeopath and owner of the Adored Beast Apothecary.

Her origin story itself is seriously inspiring. Julie felt the connection to animals from a very young age, and wanted to help them. After some years of searching, she realized her vet tech work wasn’t her best foot forward. When homeopathy cured her of a difficult illness quickly (and in a foreign country, to boot), she knew immediately that was what she wanted to offer the animal world.

But, she chose to skip vet school and study with the best of the best in veterinary and human homeopathy instead. When it came time to bring her services to the public and their animals, she had to get creative, as the Canadian vet board was having none of it. Don’t miss Julie’s shrewd choices that ended up with her owning a clinic and employing 5 vets!

I invited Julie on to open the box on leaky gut. Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the past decade, you’ve heard of this disease and how widespread it is. And you’ve likely heard even more about the ever increasing influence the microbiome has on everything in your body and that of your animals!

How are these related? How do you know when leaky gut is holding your animal back, and how can you ultimately help them get back to normal?

Julie is, to a fault, a deep researcher. She sticks to a subject like a bulldog and won’t settle until she learns all she can and takes that knowledge into the trenches, testing her findings in the real world.

Can you just throw some probiotics at this condition and expect a fix for leaky gut?

Julie’s work says no, it’s clearly not that easy. But she knows what does work, and shares that with us in this episode.

Getting the chance to listen to how this brilliant woman thinks and solves problems for animals is not to be missed!

I lost my first dog in 40 years to the rabies vaccine. He became violent and acted exactly like he had rabies. My second dog is allergic to everything a dog normally eats (fish, chicken, beef, rice, sweet potato, almonds, peanuts, all the trees, some grasses, and a few molds. I am a CCH (certified Classical Homeopath) and even I could not help my first dog. He gets all organic/range fed meats, some lamb bones, duck gizzards and feet (deboned), tons of lamb, rabbit, and turkey broth. I make his treats. We have to stop killing our pets with vaccines, and take a stand. Thank you both, Julie Ann Lee and Will Falconer for your info. (I will stop feeding him jicama for prebiotics – I think the grass and soil he eats are more effective.)

I’m so sorry you had to lose your dog like this, Renita. The fault comes from 50+ generations of vaccinating for this disease, I’m afraid. As you know as a homeopath, the chronic vaccinosis, like any chronic disease, is passed on and only gets amplified generation after generation. And the allergies! Crazy long lists, and as Julie explained, we now know why: leaky gut is the likely player, and antibiotics freely used as the step before that.

Love the updated information about giving probiotics can be just as bad if not sure what you’re doing. To give variety of probiotics. The gut brain relationship. Podcast entirely beneficial!
My dog is one of those dogs who is allergic to just about everything!! So, finding probiotic she wasn’t allergic to was hard and still is. If this is repairable, omg, that would be wonderful!

Loved your Podcast on Leaky gut with Julie from Adored Beast! So much great information! I just added a probiotic to my dog Schooner’s home made diet, Visbiome, I think it has 8 different types of flora, but the results have been remarkable! Totally, solid, formed #2s. Prior to the probiotic, it was hit or miss with daily diarrhea.

    • Renee C Schroeder on February 23, 2021 at 5:58 pm

What is Visbiome? I am sorry trying to understand?

      • Nancy on February 24, 2021 at 4:37 pm

Visbiome is a probiotic. They have dog and human line of probiotics.

    • Will Falconer, DVM on February 23, 2021 at 6:29 pm

Nice, Mary Ann. Does it appear to have SBO (soil borne organisms)?

      • Nancy on February 24, 2021 at 4:40 pm

I believe it is a bovine based probiotic. I had to stop giving it to my dog since she’s allergic to it.

    • Stephanie Beischlag on March 2, 2021 at 12:45 pm
